Global Methodist Church Announces 2026 General Conference in Johannesburg, South Africa
Theme: The Beauty of Holiness – A Spirit-Filled Life. A Holy Calling.
The Commission on the General Conference of the Global Methodist Church is honored to announce that the 2026 General Conference will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa, from August 30 through September 5, 2026. The gathering will take place at the prestigious Sandton Convention Centre, located in the heart of the city’s vibrant and well-connected financial district.
This historic decision marks the first time the denomination’s General Conference will be held on the African continent. It is a powerful affirmation of the Global Methodist Church’s commitment to being a truly global movement. “We are thrilled to bring the 2026 General Conference to Johannesburg,” said Rev. Mike Grant, Chair of the Commission. “After careful and prayerful due diligence, Johannesburg—particularly the Sandton area—emerged as the leading location based on essential considerations such as site layout, infrastructure, safety, and financial feasibility. Although Central Africa was initially announced, the planning team prioritized these critical factors in making their final decision.”
Grant continued, “This is a significant moment in the life of our church. Hosting the conference in South Africa offers us an opportunity to celebrate the rich diversity and growing witness of the Global Methodist Church across the world. It’s not just a conference location—it’s a visible expression of who we are becoming.” Bishop Mark Webb also expressed his excitement about the decision. “Having traveled extensively throughout South Africa, I am confident that Johannesburg is an ideal location for this General Conference. The city offers exceptional hospitality, a strong Christian presence, and a unique opportunity to celebrate the global nature of our Church. Sandton provides both the practical infrastructure and the inspirational setting we need—and it is widely regarded as a safe and welcoming area for international visitors. I am eager for our Church family to experience all that Johannesburg has to offer.”
The Sandton Convention Centre is a modern venue situated in a district recognized by both locals and international travelers as one of the safest in Johannesburg. To further encourage the safety and comfort of all participants, the Commission has secured hotel blocks that are either directly connected to the venue or within a short, less-than-half-mile shuttle ride.
As with any major international city, visitors are advised to exercise standard travel precautions—especially at the airport and during evening hours. The Commission is working diligently to ensure a smooth, secure, and welcoming experience for all attendees.
Important Note on Travel and Lodging
At this time, attendees are strongly encouraged not to make independent hotel arrangements. The Commission is finalizing vetted and budget-friendly room blocks that will be released in the coming months. These options will be both cost-effective and reviewed from a safety standpoint. We will also be partnering with a travel management service to assist with travel arrangements and provide a group rate.
